Full Description

Ayurveda is often simply translated as the Science of Life (ayu=life, veda=science). One of my teachers, Dr. Sunil Joshi of The Vinayak Ayurveda and

Panchakarm Research Foundation, gives a little more detail. He explains that life contains four main components: the body, the sense organs, the mind and the soul. Therefore, Ayurveda is the science of life which studies and nourishes, not only the body, but the sense organs, the mind and the soul as well.

Ayurveda teaches us that we are all part of nature, and we are constantly affected by everything around us. We are all a combination of the five elements; earth, water, fire, air and ether. These five elements combine together to form the 3 doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha). Vata is composed of air and ether; Pitta is composed of fire and water; Kapha is composed of water and earth. Each individual is made up of a unique combination of these elements and doshas, and Ayurveda strives to promote balance in our lives using the rule that like increases like. For example, if I am feeling particularly “fiery” one day (easy to anger; hot, red face; burning sensations), then I know that my Pitta is out of balance and I need to eat cooling foods (coconut, avocado, mint) and perform cooling activities (staying in the shade, a cooling breathing practice, calming meditation) in order to bring my doshas back into balance. If I ignore these warning signs and eat hot peppers and tomatoes while sitting in the direct, hot sun of summer, then I can expect to push my Pitta further out of balance. If I continue this behavior over a long period of time, I can expect to eventually push my body to a point that it begins to manifest signs of disease caused by this doshic imbalance. This is often the stage of disease when Western doctors are needed to step in with medications and invasive procedures. Ayurveda strives to bring us back into balance before reaching this stage of disease by recognizing 4 stages of disease before a Western doctor would even acknowledge a problem.
